Installing MATLAB for Students

Instructions

New Users

  1. Go to MATLAB Access and Support for Everyone at Virginia Tech and click Sign in to get started.

  2. Sign in using your Virginia Tech Username (PID) and VT Username (PID) password, followed by 2-factor authentication. If you see Consent to Information Release, click Share to proceed.

  3. If you already have a MathWorks account using your Virginia Tech email address, sign in using that account and skip to step 8. Otherwise, you'll need to create a MathWorks account by clicking Create and entering the required information.

  4. Once you have created your MathWorks account, you will see the screen below. IMPORTANT: You MUST verify your MathWorks account before you can continue.

Downloading the Matlab Installer

  1. Once you have verified your MathWorks account, return to MATLAB Access and Support for Everyone at Virginia Tech and click Sign in to get started.

  2. Sign in using your Virginia Tech Username (PID) and VT Username (PID) password, followed by 2-factor authentication. If you see Consent to Information Release, click Share to proceed.

  3. Now, sign in with the MathWorks account you just created.

  4. After signing in, you will be taken to the download page, with the most recent version of Matlab shown by default. Click the button to proceed.

  5. Now, click the button that corresponds to your operating system to download the appropriate installer.

  6. Proceed to the macOS instructions or the Windows instructions, depending on your platform.

macOS Installation Instructions

  1. Once the installer has finished downloading, double-click it to mount the DMG file.

  2. When the DMG window opens, double-click InstallForMacOSX to start the installer. You'll then need to enter your Mac password to allow the installer to run.
        NOTE: You may see an "...app downloaded from the Internet" warning, which can be bypassed by clicking Open.

  3. In the MathWorks Product Installer window, you'll need to log in using your MathWorks account.

  4. Review the MathWorks License Agreement and click Yes to agree, then click Next.
  5. Ensure that the Academic - Total Headcount license is selected, and then click Next.

  6. Confirm that your user information is correct, and then click Next.
  7. Leave the default destination folder and click Next.
  8. Now, you'll need to select the toolboxes that you want to install. Toolboxes can always be added later by running the installer again.
        NOTE: It is not recommended to select all available toolboxes, as this requires about 40 GB of free space.

  9. On the Select Options screen, choose whether to send user experience information to MathWorks and then click Next.
  10. Next, you'll need to confirm your selections and click Begin Install to begin installation.

  11. When installation is complete, click Close to exit the installer. Matlab is now installed and ready for use.

Windows Installation Instructions

  1. Once the installer has finished downloading, double-click it to begin extraction.

  2. When extraction is complete, the installer will open. Now, you'll need to sign in using your MathWorks account.

  3. Review the MathWorks License Agreement and click Yes to agree, then click Next.
  4. Ensure that the Academic - Total Headcount license is selected, and then click Next.

  5. Confirm that your user information is correct, and then click Next.
  6. Leave the default destination folder and click Next.
  7. Now, you'll need to select the toolboxes that you want to install. Toolboxes can always be added later by running the installer again.
        NOTE: It is not recommended to select all available toolboxes, as this requires about 40 GB of free space.

  8. On the Select Options screen, choose whether to place an icon for Matlab on the desktop and whether to send user experience information to MathWorks. Then, click Next.
  9. Next, you'll need to confirm your selections and click Begin Install to begin installation.

  10. When installation is complete, click Close to exit the installer. Matlab is now installed and ready for use.

Matlab License Renewal

The student Matlab license expires each year on July 31 and students will see a message in Matlab similar to the one below as expiration approaches. The renewal has no cost, but you will need to follow these steps to renew your Matlab installation.

  1. Open Matlab and click the down arrow underneath the Help button. Then click Licensing and click Activate Software.

  2. In the MathWorks Software Activation window, ensure that Activate automatically using the Internet is selected and then click Next.

  3. Now, you'll need to sign in using your MathWorks account, which should be your VT email address and the password you set up when initially installing Matlab. If you're not sure what your password is, click Forgot your password? to reset it.

  4. Once you've signed in, ensure that the license number shown below is selected and click Next.

  5. You'll now be asked to verify your university login information. Click Click here and sign in to the website that opens with your Virginia Tech Username (PID) and VT Username (PID) password.

  6. Once verification is complete, you'll see the message below. Now, go back to the Matlab window and click OK to close the verification window. Now, click Next to proceed with the renewal.

  7. Confirm that your user information is correct, and then click Next.
  8. Now, click Confirm to complete the renewal.
